    A data structure for the use of patterns in the perceptual ordering of the game of chess

    It is well known that the way one perceives a problem can influence the difficulty of solving the problem in a profound way. In the case of computer chess playing programs, one finds that most programs perceive the game in much the same way. They are all based on Shannon\u27s original proposal for chess playing programs. His approach was to generate all of the possible combinations of moves up to a certain number of plays and then a subset of all combinations to a deeper level thereafter. Each of these moves would then be evaluated as to its relative worth. This paper lays the foundation for research in an alternate method of approaching the game based on how human experts perceive the board initially. A suitable data structure for this is then proposed and discussed --Abstract, page ii

    Estimating the Height of the Planetary Boundary Layer for Diffusion-Transport Models: A Four Algorithm Comparison

    Diffusion-Transport (D-T) modeling is a branch of numerical weather prediction concerned with eddy diffusion of particulate pollutant plumes and their transport by the wind. When conducting D-T modeling, establishing the height of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) is crucial to defining the vertical bounds within which a plume can become thoroughly mixed. The PBL can be deduced from observations or model simulation. Three sounding analysis PBL algorithms were considered - the Potential Instability Mixing Depth (PIMIX), Potential Temperature (POTEMP), and Gradient Richardson Number (RICH) algorithms. A turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) based PBL algorithm was also evaluated. The purpose of this research was threefold. First, observed atmospheric soundings were input, and algorithm output was compared to human analyses of the observed soundings (Analysis). Second, Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) generated forecast soundings were input, and algorithm output was compared to human analyses of the forecast soundings (Simulation). Finally, algorithm output from simulation was compared with the human analyses from analysis (Verification). These PBL comparisons were put into one of four categories: (1) hit, (2) indication of deep convection, (3) miss, or (4) algorithm failure. Algorithm performance was ranked based on the number of hits, then on indications of deep convection. PIMIX was the best analysis tool, while both POTEMP and TKE were the best simulation methods. All algorithms had a similar number of hits for verification, but PIMIX had more estimates indicative of deep convection, so was ranked best

    Tornadoes of Utterances: A Theoretical Approach to Studying Discourse, Power and Knowledge

    This paper expands upon our current understanding of the nexus between discourse and power by presenting an alternative theoretical approach to studying the intertextual workings of various discourses and how they work independently and interdependently to create power. Using Bakhtin’s theories of language, the paper first shows how all discourse is heteroglot and intertextually related to other discourses. The paper then shows how this intertextuality works to increase the connection between discourse, power and knowledge as discussed by Foucault. Taking this knowledge, the tornado model of discourse and power is presented as a theoretical and methodological tool to be used in studying specific discourses. Additionally, the tornado model can be used to help resist the power of such discourses

    Loads on Box Culverts under High Embankments: Positive Projection, Without Imperfect Trench

    This report describes the instrumentation and measurements of settlements and pressures on two box culverts in Clark County, Kentucky, designed without the imperfect trench -- one for yielding and one for unyielding foundation conditions. The structures were primarily instrumented for comparison with three structures previously constructed in McCreary County, which were designed using the imperfect trench method. Pressures on the two structures in Clark County generally exceed the product of the unit weight of the overlying material and its height. The pressures on the culverts in McCreary County appear to be lower than expected -- indicating that the imperfect trench is generally effective in reducing loads

    Periodic orbit theory and spectral rigidity in pseudointegrable systems

    We calculate numerically the periodic orbits of pseudointegrable systems of low genus numbers gg that arise from rectangular systems with one or two salient corners. From the periodic orbits, we calculate the spectral rigidity Δ3(L)\Delta_3(L) using semiclassical quantum mechanics with LL reaching up to quite large values. We find that the diagonal approximation is applicable when averaging over a suitable energy interval. Comparing systems of various shapes we find that our results agree well with Δ3\Delta_3 calculated directly from the eigenvalues by spectral statistics. Therefore, additional terms as e.g. diffraction terms seem to be small in the case of the systems investigated in this work. By reducing the size of the corners, the spectral statistics of our pseudointegrable systems approaches the one of an integrable system, whereas very large differences between integrable and pseudointegrable systems occur, when the salient corners are large. Both types of behavior can be well understood by the properties of the periodic orbits in the system

    Application of the Trace Formula in Pseudointegrable Systems

    We apply periodic-orbit theory to calculate the integrated density of states N(k)N(k) from the periodic orbits of pseudointegrable polygon and barrier billiards. We show that the results agree so well with the results obtained from direct diagonalization of the Schr\"odinger equation, that about the first 100 eigenvalues can be obtained directly from the periodic-orbit calculations in good accuracy.Comment: 5 Pages, 4 Figures, submitted to Phys.     Loads on Box Culverts under High Embankments: Analysis and Design Considerations

    Pressure and design analyses of five reinforced concrete box culverts are presented. Three of the culverts were constructed with the imperfect trench. Measured pressures on the culverts are compared to pressures predicted by the theories of Marston, Spangler, and Castes. Also, comparisons are made between measured pressures and calculated design pressures using AASHTO\u27s Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges, 1.2.2(A). It is noted that the imperfect trench is, apparently, effective in reducing pressures on the top slab. The AASHTO design formulas underestimated the pressure on the top slab of the culverts without the imperfect trench

    Unstructured-grid methods development for unsteady aerodynamic and aeroelastic analyses

    The current status of unstructured grid methods development in the Unsteady Aerodynamics Branch at NASA-Langley is described. These methods are being developed for unsteady aerodynamic and aeroelastic analyses. The flow solvers are highlighted which were developed for the solution of the unsteady Euler equations and selected results are given which show various features of the capability. The results demonstrate 2-D and 3-D applications for both steady and unsteady flows. Comparisons are also made with solutions obtained using a structured grid code and with experimental data to determine the accuracy of the unstructured grid methodology. These comparisons show good agreement which thus verifies the accuracy
